January 21, 2014, I found out I was pregnant. For someone who never planned on having kids the news came as a complete shock.
I wish I could say the moment was similar to what is portrayed on the TV commercials with the stick turning colour and me and my husband Kim, jumping around hysterically happy. Unfortunately, it was not quite like that.
Instead of having a party in the bathroom I did what I always do when I’m presented with information that I know nothing about, I Googled.
I’m not sure if it’s because no one that works at Google has kids or if it’s some kind of sick joke. If you are looking for a bit of clarity or comfort typing “pregnancy symptoms” into Google is not the place to start. In fact, it was the biggest mistake I could have made.
Information such as, “The 10 worst things you never knew about being pregnant,” “Why your body will never be the same again,” and “How careers and childbirth don’t mix” pushed me from freaked-out to full-out panic mode.
But like a bad car accident you can’t look away from, I could not stop reading. The more I read the worse it got. Then just as I was about to resign to the fact that my life was officially over, I had what my old friend Oprah calls an “ah-ha” moment. The simple realization that it can’t ALL be that bad…
As a naturally positive, glass half full, kind of gal a few facts popped into my head. At 32 I probably have more fertile days behind then ahead of me. As a healthy holistic nutritionist I have a fantastic healthy food, plant-based, organic focused diet. As an avid runner and wannabe yogi I’m physically fit. I’m married to a man that I’m head-over-heels in love with and have a support network of family and friends that would make the folks from Full-House jealous.
All-in-all I’m one lucky lady.
So perhaps I am capable of budding a baby, but it’s going to be done on my terms.
Applying all my holistic health lifestyle practices, my passion for helping others and complete fear over what’s going to happen during this next chapter of my life I have created this blog. A place to share my wellness journey as a pregnant woman and the holistic health practices I learn and apply along the way.
Thank-you for joining me on this wild ride, I look forward to not only sharing with you but also learning from you. As a newbie mom I definitely don’t have all the answers, but as a holistic nutritionist I’m truly looking forward to applying my knowledge and helping other mamas to live more healthy and happy lives.
