Let’s face it, as much as we try, time is not on our side. I have found this even more true since becoming a new mama. All of a sudden it’s almost as though time is on warp speed.
The unfortunate reality is that typically the less time we have the more emphasis we place on quick and convenient.
When thinking about the foods we are choosing, quick and convenient often comes at a greater cost.
These options typically include empty calories, sodium, sugar, preservatives and other additives that long term do much more harm than good for us and our growing baby.
In a perfect world we would have endless amounts of time to plan, prepare and of course grocery shop, cook and sit down to actually enjoy dinner every night. I’m not sure what your reality is, but these days having a shower is a huge accomplishment.
However, even though I am (like everyone else) time deprived, the meals I eat never come from a box, bag or drive-thru window. So does this mean I make everything from scratch? Insert historical laughter here. I like most new moms don’t have time to make gourmet meals, but I do have a few tips and tricks that have helped me to ditch the drive-thru.
I take the time to plan all the meals we are going to eat each week. I ask myself, what nights are we going to be home? What nights are we going to be home late or not at all? Planning out my week has allowed to plan my meals according to my schedule, cooking larger portions one night to ensure we have leftovers for the next or choosing a quick meal when I know we are going to be home late. Making a grocery list and shopping based on our schedule drastically decreases our chances of grabbing something on the go or eating something that has a shelf-life of 100 years.
Don’t Forgo Fresh
Fresh fruit and vegetables should make up the majority of your meal, they should not be a small afterthought side. I always think about how I can incorporate more fresh foods into my meals in unique ways. I always like to have cut up veggies and fruit ready to go in the fridge that I can throw into my diaper bag on the way out the door.
Have an Escape Route
Let’s face it, despite all our best efforts there are going to be times when we have pick dinner up or eat in the car as we rush from one thing to the next. For these days I always have a few options to turn to. Places where I know I will be able to get healthy food to-go and won’t get stuck eating something that has 1000 calories and no nutritional value. Look for local healthy restaurants with to-go menu options or check out the prepared foods section at your local health food store, they typically have fantastic quick, nutritious and delicious options.
