As we all know pregnancy is a super busy time, planning, preparing and all the upcoming changes can add additional stress to even the most Zen mama-to-be. During this busy time it often becomes difficult to make time for a lot of things but your vitamin N should not be one of them.
Vitamin N? Many are unfamiliar with this extremely important nutrient, the Nature Vitamin. Not unlike all the other necessary vitamins and minerals our body needs to stay happy and healthy, the Nature Vitamin is no exception.
According to the David Suzuki Foundation studies have found that spending time outdoors in a park, beach, wetland or forest, has a number of health benefits including; helping to reduce blood pressure, anxiety and stress levels. In addition, to helping improve sleep, increasing vigour and liveliness and even boosting the immune system.
Often during the week we become so busy that we go from the house, to the car, to work, to the house, to the couch, resulting in little, if any, outside time. Of course, there are all kinds of activities that break this cycle including; children, taking public transit, going to the gym, socializing and so on, but overall many of us are just spending too much time on our touché inside and not enough time on our toes outside.
As I have shared, exercise is extremely important during pregnancy and spending time in nature gives us the opportunity to move our body while also relaxing our mind. Taking in the beauty of nature and appreciating the miracle of Mother Nature is so beneficial to our overall physical and mental wellbeing.
For many of us living in the city means connecting with Mother Nature can be a bit more challenging but, should not be used as the excuse to keep us from spending time outdoors. Here are my top five ways to make sure you get your Vitamin N this week.
Take your gym outside
According to the WHO it is suggested adults between 18 and 64 engage in a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or, at least 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity each week. Moving this exercise outside whenever possible is ideal.
Commit to 30 minutes three times a week
Deciding to spend more time outside is important but by setting a small attainable goal chances are you will actually turn this thought into action. Decide what is realistic for you, set your weekly goal, and stick to it.
Schedule it in
Let’s face it, between work and all our weekday commitments finding extra time can be hard. Scheduling your nature time in at the beginning of each week will ensure it’s in your calendar, increasing the chances that it’s actually going to happen.
Find your spot
For many of us living in the city finding nature can be its own challenge. But, chances are there is a park near you or a quiet neighbourhood filled with old tress and lovely gardens that will make you feel like you are miles away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Turn it into a date night
Going for an after dinner walk with your partner is the perfect pregnancy date night. Strolling together, holding hands and dreaming about your new baby is a great chance to bond. Plus a little exercise before bed will probably help you have a more sound slumber.
